UGLY,
ON PURPOSE.

Squiggles, confetti, and clashing color. The 1980s design movement that declared good taste optional and fun mandatory.

On display

Clashing color

Bright, deliberately mismatched palettes thrown together and dared to clash.

Squiggles & geometry

The "Bacterio" squiggle, confetti dots, and bold primitive shapes in playful imbalance.

Flat & graphic

No gradients, no realism — flat color, thick outlines, and hard drop-shadows for pop.

Joyful imbalance

Asymmetry on purpose. Elements tilt, overlap, and collide to feel alive, not tidy.

Curator's note

Modernism said "form follows function." Memphis answered "form follows fun" — one of the only movements built on the conviction that delight and surprise are legitimate design goals in themselves.
